Vita
Jochen grew up in Wuppertal, close to Düsseldorf/ Cologne. He obtained a master’s degree in General Mechanical Engineering at Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen in 1993, with a particular focus on medical and polymer technologies and scientific and industrial stages at Helmholtz Institute, Deutsche Airbus (EADS) and Faber Castell (Brazil). After his diploma thesis at the Textiles Institute of Clemson University (USA), Jochen gained first experiences in IP law at Hardaway Law Firm in Greenville (USA) in 1994.
Jochen joined KSNH Patentanwälte (now Klunker IP) as a patent engineer in the same year. In 1997, he qualified as a German patent attorney and in 1998 as a European patent attorney. He became partner of the firm still in 1998. Jochen is a European trade mark attorney at the EUIPO (formerly OHIM) since 1998 and a European design attorney since 2012.
For the last 20+ years, Jochen has been a managing partner of Klunker IP. He is a main contact for local as well as foreign clients, in particular from the USA and Japan.
Besides English, Jochen speaks French and Portuguese and has passive knowledge of Spanish. He likes to hike, ski and travel with his family and enjoys doing sports, such as soccer, tennis, golf and indoor climbing.
Practice
Jochen is equally active in patents and trade marks, as well as in designs. His work includes prosecution, opposition, invalidation, litigation as well as employee invention matters, including setting up alternative compensation schemes for international companies. Jochen overviews IP matters of clients from the USA and Japan and manages international patent portfolios of various German clients. Good personal contact is of utmost importance to him.
Already in 1998, Jochen joined various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as AIPPI, MARQUES and ECTA. Over the years, he established a strong international network for Klunker IP. Within MARQUES, Jochen chaired and expanded the activities of the Trademark Law and Practice Team for over 10 years, which mainly deals directly with the EUIPO and WIPO. In addition, Jochen was on the MARQUES Council from 2013 to 2017.
Within Klunker IP, besides being a managing partner, Jochen educates young patent and trade mark attorneys. Outside of Klunker IP, Jochen often gives presentations on relevant IP topics, both internally before clients and publicly on international conferences, such as at MARQUES and UNION.
Jochen’s technical expertise includes medical technologies, polymer technologies, textile technologies, composites, hydraulics and pneumatics, solenoid valves, paper making, bank note manufacturing, smart card technology, and security elements.
